ABOUT

B. Bhanumati was born in a musically inclined family. Her mother was Isamani L. R. Lakshmi, a noted and composer and father was Dr C. S. Balakrishnan, a zealous promoter of the cause of Indian Classical Music.

She has had the privilege of the tutelage of legends like Padmashri K. N. Dandayuthapani Pillai at Chennai, Padmabhushan Dr K. Venkatalakshamma, the doyenne of Mysore Palace tradition and Padmabhushan Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan.

The popular group dance troupe, Bharatanjali formed under her aegis and instruction has performed over 1000 shows in all major national dance festivals of India and has also visited the United Kingdom and the United States for performances, workshops, lecture demonstrations on group choreography and abhinaya, as well as cultural exchange programs.

 

She has been interviewed in Doordarshan, ETV and Samaya television channels. She has also been featured in The Hindu, The New Indian Express and The Times of India.

  • Senior Fellowship on Group Choreography: Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India: 1998-2000

  • Archival Documentation on Dance Gurus Padmashri Dandayuthapani Pillai and Padmabhushan Venkatalakshamma by Shruti Foundation, Chennai and Sangeeta Nritya Academy, Bangalore, respectively

  • Featured in Lecture Demonstration on Group Choreography on Shabda, a unique website dedicated to Indian Classical Performing Arts.

  • Contributed to Shanmukha (a publication of the Shankuhananda Sabha, Mumbai) - an article on the concept and realization of Group Choreography in Bharatanatyam
